Tropical rainforests are special forests that grow near the equator. It is usually around 80 degrees all year long. These forests can receive 150 to 400 inches of rain every year!
There are usually 4 layers of a rainforest. Many different animals live in each layer.

The jaguar is the largest and most powerful wild cat. They are mammals.
They are usually yellow-brownish with black spots. An adult male jaguar may be 4 to 7 feet long. The jaguar stands about 3 feet high at the shoulder, and it weighs up to 300 pounds when full grown. It has a big head, and long thick legs. The jaguar's back legs are longer than its front legs to improve jumping. Its front paws have long claws that retract to help grab and hold its prey.
Jaguars are carnivores. They hunt mammals, reptiles, birds, and eggs. They are nocturnal. Their enemy is man. They are very good swimmers.

Scorpions

Scorpions are arachnids; they are related to spiders.
They have 8 legs. Each leg has a tiny claw. The stinger at the end of the tail injects a poison. Scorpions can be 1 to 8 inches long. They can be black, brown, tan or red.
Scorpions are carnivores. They eat insects and small rodents. They sting their prey to paralyze it. Their enemy is other scorpions.
Scorpions are nocturnal. During the day they rest under rocks or in burrows. Scorpions grow and shed their exoskeletons many times before they are fully grown.

The Brazilian Tapir is a hoofed mammal with a long, rubbery nose that forms a small trunk.
The Brazilian tapir is about 3 feet tall at the shoulder. It weighs about 600 pounds. They have a bulky body, short legs, and a bristly coat.
Tapirs are herbivores. They eat water plants, leaves, buds, fallen fruit, and twigs. They use their trunk to sniff food, reach leaves, grab them, and bring them to its mouth.
Their enemy is the jaguar.
They spend a lot of time in the water. They are excellent swimmers.

The anteater is a large, hairy mammal.
It has a long, tubular snout and a small, pencil-sized mouth. It has a tongue that is 2 feet long! They usually grow to be 4 feet long plus they have a tail that is 3 feet long. They have long black-gray hair.
Anteaters are insect eaters. They mostly eat ants and termites. They catch insects using their long tongues. They can flick their tongue in and out up to 160 times each minute. Their enemies are the puma and the jaguar.
They walk on their knuckles. They have terrible eyesight but a good sense of smell.

Fruit bats have wings that are long fingers covered by thin skin. They have furry bodies. They have weak legs and can’t walk very well.
Fruit bats eat mostly fruit juice and flower nectar. They chew the fruit, then spit out the seeds, peel, and pulp. They use the sense of smell to find their food.
They are nocturnal. They spend their day hanging upside down from their feet.

Boa Constrictors are large snakes.
They can grow to be 6 to 10 feet long and can weigh over 60 pounds. They can be different shades of brown, tan, gray, or black with ovals and diamonds.
Boas are carnivores. They eat birds, monkeys, rats, lizards, iguanas, and young crocodiles. They mainly hunt at night. They kill by squeezing their prey until it can no longer breathe. They swallow the prey whole.
The boa has few predators. It is at the top of the food chain.
They have no fangs. They have a forked tongue.

Red Eyed Tree Frogs are carnivores. They eat insects. They catch their food with their long, sticky tongue. Their enemies include bats, snakes, and birds.
They are nocturnal. During the day they rest on the underside of large leaves.

The toucan is a bird with a huge beak. They are very poor flyers. They move around by hopping in trees.

The harpy eagle is one of the largest eagles and the most powerful birds in the world.
They are about 3 feet long, but their wingspan is over 6 feet long! They weigh between 10 to 18 pounds. They have curved talons that are up to 5 inches long!
Eagles are carnivores. They hunt and scavenge during the day. They eat sloths, monkeys, opossums, and iguanas. They dive down onto the prey and catch it with their clawed feet. Their enemy is people. People have destroyed their habitats.
They build large nests of sticks and twigs very high in trees or cliffs. They make clicking and whistling calls.

Scarlet Macaw
