First Quarter

Religion - The Church is One

Math - place value, comparing, ordering, rounding numbers, money, adding & subtracting whole numbers with regrouping, multiplication

S.S. - what are communities, the three types of communities, how geography affects communities, regions of the USA, environment and communties, basic map skills, map scale, grid maps

Science - ch. 1-4 animals & ecosystems, food chains, protecting living things

Language Arts -

    Phonics - consonants, hard & soft c and g, short & long vowels

    English - sentences and nouns

    Reading -  introduction to third grade reading strategies to be used all year, adventure stories - cause & effect, making inferences, sequence

    Writing - personal narratives, how-to articles

    Spelling - short vowels, VCE, long vowels, 3 letter clusters, long i, /ow/ as in clown, /aw/ as in lawn, unexpected consonant patterns

Second Quarter

Math - graphing data, probability

S.S. - communities over time - how they change and grow, time lines, flow charts, US history - Native Americans, Revolutionary War, pioneers, Civil War, map skills

Science - chapters 3 & 4 - animals and their ecosystems, food chains, protecting living things

Religion - The Church is Holy, Advent & Christmas seasons

Language Arts -

    Phonics - compound words, blends, digraphs, y as a consonant & a vowel, r-controlled vowels

    English - pronouns and verbs

    Writing - descriptions and personal letters

    Reading - stories about family & cultural traditions - author's viewpoint, classifying with graphic organizers, noting details, topic, main idea, supporting details

    Spelling -  /oi/ in coin, /j/ /k/ /kw/

Third Quarter

Math - time & temperature, customary & metric measurement, geometry

S.S. - government - local, state, federal, world government, branches of government, national and state symbols, Washington monuments, population maps and map skills

Religion - The Church is Catholic & Apostolic

Science - Unit C, Ch. 6 - Force Shapes the Land - Erosion, Unit D, Ch. 7 - Earth's Weather

Language Arts

    Phonics - vowel pairs, digraphs, dipthongs

    Reading - fantasy stories - realism/fantasy, drawing conclusions, story structure & story maps, folktales - following a sequence of steps,

    Spelling - vowel + r, ed/ing endings, change the y to i, prefixes re & un

    Writing - book reports and persuasive paragraphs

    English - adjectives and adverbs

Fourth Quarter

Math - perimeter, area, volume, fractions, decimals, advanced multiplication and division (with 2 & 3 digits)

S.S. - world culture and economics

Science - Unit E, Ch. 9 - Force & Motion, Unit E, Ch. 10 - Work & Machines, Unit F, Ch. 11-12 - Matter & Energy

Religion - The Church Has a Mission to the World

    Phonics - prefixes, base words, suffixes, syllables, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, dictionary skills   

    Reading - animal stories - fact charts, comparison/contrast, making judgments

    Writing - creative writing and research reports

    English - capitalization, punctuation, diagramming sentences

    Spelling - suffixes, ful, ly, er, Vowel Consonant Consonant Vowel (VCCV), double consonants, words beginning with a or be, contractions
