The Rite of Christian Imitation of Adults is the result of the directives of the Vatican Council II for the restoration of the catechumenal process. Its promulgation in l972 by Pope Paul VI marked a significant shift in the practice of initiating adults in the Catholic Christian community; the local community forms men and women, responding to an often inexplicable call, around the word of God. Together they discern and welcome God’s invitation to embrace life in the Catholic Christian community. This leads to serving the mission of Jesus in the world.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a restoration of the ancient practice of initiation in the Church. Focused on conversion, candidates entered an extended period of formation and probation. The community ritually celebrates the conversion at various points on the journey, culminating with the celebration of baptism, confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. An extended catechesis followed this to help the newly initiated to live the commitment they made: lives of justice, service and charity as witnesses of the reign of God. Initiation into the Christian Community is not concerned about programs that come and go. Rather, Christian initiation is concerned with the fundamental values of the Christian way of life. That is why the The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is not a program but a sacramental process. The Spirit empowers the believer to proclaim the gift received: liberation and redemption in and through the person of Jesus, the Christ.

Bereavement Ministry

The mission of the Bereavement Ministry is to provide a luncheon or dinner to grieving families after the death of a loved one.

When a person passes away the family they leave behind are grief stricken. While flooded with emotions, they still have the task of making necessary arrangements. They will have many decisions to make and people to contact.

What the Bereavement Ministry is trying to do is alleviate some of the family's stress.   After a funeral it is customary for family and friends of the deceased to come together.  They usually share a meal to celebrate the life of their loved one. We can provide that for them.

Our ministry begins when the church office calls us with a family in need. A call to the school /Coleman Park is next, to find out what facility is available. When school is in session we will be limited tin space however, Coleman Park Recreation Center has a meeting room with a kitchen we can use if available.

A calling tree/email will be set up to find out who in the ministry is available to cook set up, serve or clean up. You will not be expected to participate every time we have a bereavernent meal, unless you want to.

This service is only offered to St. Edward parishioners. It is free of charge. Donations from the families are accepted and will be put into an account for further meals.

If you are interested in being a part of this ministry, please contact Pam Kimbro at pdkimbros@bellsouth.net or Sarah House
at 283-3451 or vincehouseog@contcast.net .

Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Education is celebrated during the last week in January by participating in a variety of different spiritual, fun, and service-oriented activities each day of the week. Since 1974, Catholic Schools Week has been an annual national celebration recognizing the important role that Catholic elementary and secondary schools across the country play in providing a quality education for America’s young people. It celebrates education that goes beyond preparation for a secular life, emphasizing the spiritual and moral values necessary to live a Christian life.  The development office helps support the school's activities during this week and promotes Catholic Education.

Development Office Express

This weekly eblast keeps those signed up to receive emails informed of church and school happenings and events.  If you have not signed up to be on the email list please do so and you will start receiving this e-newsletter weekly.

Financial Support

The development office is here to assist the Home and School Association and Booster Club in their fundraising efforts which accomplish so much for St. Edward School.  We also receive funding from generous friends of our church and school which allow us to accomplish our mission and to ensure our future vision.  We appreciate their dedication to and investment in our children.  The fundraising efforts of our church and school are outlined on a seperate webpage titled "Fundraising".

Community Needs

The development office is also here to assist our community with their needs.  We are happy to promote and work with other organization's efforts to provide assistance where it is needed in our community.  Please check out the page devoted to our community needs for opportunities to help in a variety of ways.  If you are aware of a community need or an effort that is ongoing, please contact our office so that we may be of assistance.  We also post job opportunities that have been forwarded to us so that we may provide that information to those seeking employment.

The Development Office is a committed advocate of St. Edward Church and School.  We seek individuals and groups who believe in our mission, vision, goals and values and secure the financial support needed to sustain and thrive through grants, scholarships, endowments, and planned giving.

Healing Ministry

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.” When we suffer sickness or loss of any kind we are like sheep . . . vulnerable, lost and empty.

The Healing Ministry exists to reach out and actively listen, to provide support, practical information, education, and referrals to other resources, and to provide respite and faith support to anyone in need. If you suffer from a chronic condition like Alzheimer’s or stroke, or have a serious illness like cancer, or if you have lost a loved one to death, divorce, or separation, this group exists to help you.

We encourage you to take advantage of the knowledge, skill, and understanding available through this group, which offers valuable practical and emotional support gained through their experience.

You are welcome to join us as we meet every second and fourth Sunday at 1:00 pm in the church library/conference room. Our group is on going and open to visitors and members. We plan to divide our 90 minutes into two parts:  (1) business of the group (2) sharing in further education of our group about grief and healing. We will announce guest speakers several times a year.

With their permission, names of parish members who are ill in the weekly bulletin and in the weekly Development Office Express so we all know who wants prayer.

Below are the names, contact information, and some background about the illness or loss with which we are most familiar. The group members are volunteers who offer their support freely. They’re not offering professional help or advice. You are encouraged to contact any member at your convenience. Please keep this list handy for future reference, and of course you can always call the church office. If you want more information about the Healing Ministry, please contact Mike Ryan or John Calzavara.

Mission

The ministry exists to reach out and actively listen, to provide support, practical information, education, and referrals to other resources, and to provide respite and faith support to anyone in need.

Scope

The ministry will personally contact those who suffer from or provide care for those with serious illness, chronic conditions such as stroke, or the loss by death, divorce, or separation of a loved one. The ministry will ensure that we listen to those affected by these situations with respect and compassion, offering support as circumstances suggest.
The ministry will assemble a central collection of resource, education, and referral information useful for dealing with these conditions. Typical services will be to engage in regular conversation, to invite them to scheduled meetings, to provide other support such as transportation or meal preparation as we are able, and to offer to pray with the person. We will maintain a prayer list for all we serve, and intend to host an annual Mass and celebration of the lives of those who battle illness and those who have died.
We will use regular meetings to improve our skills and knowledge of the best methods of support, how to listen, and how to offer help to those in need. We will invite local speakers to help broaden our awareness and sharpen our skills.

Limitations

This is a volunteer organization and support group that does not represent the parish or the diocese in its efforts. We will not offer nor create any impression that we are qualified to provide professional counseling, advice, therapy, medical or ethical advice or direction.

We will not provide physical, financial, transportation, or other support or services except at the individual personal discretion of the volunteer(s). It shall be clear that the responsibility and initiative is that of the individual volunteer, not the group or the parish.

We will take no actions which obligate or result in the parish being responsible or liable. At this time our services will be targeted to St. Edwards parish members, but may expand in the future.

OUR CHURCH

Due to the overcrowded conditions of St. Patrick's Church and School and the rapid growth of South Nashville, the late Bishop Adrian made the decision to establish a new parish.  Plans for a church and school were developed for property on Thompson Lane.

In June of 1952, Father Aaron Gildea was appointed the first pastor of Saint Edward Church.   Bishop Adrian dedicated the Church and School on June 21, 1952.

The first school year began on September 2, 1952 with an enrollment of 142 students.  The Sisters of Mercy conducted the school.  The staff was composed of three sisters and one lay teacher. In August of 1953, Father Paul Caldwell became the second pastor.  In 1961, Father Ned Elliott became the new pastor.  The parish purchased the house and lot adjoining the property on the east side. Before the departure of Father Elliott, a new addition of eight classrooms and a library was constructed.

In 1969, Father Paul Hostettler began a two year period as pastor.  Father John Cain replaced Father Hostettler in July, 1971.

Father Pat Connor came to Saint Edward in 1978.  Saint Edward School, which at the beginning had a faculty consisting of only four, had grown to a faculty of twenty, including full-time teachers in art, music, library, and physical education.  Father Connor began the construction for the Family Life Center.

Father Joseph Patrick Breen came to Saint Edward in October of 1984.  During the past 21 years that Father Breen has been at St. Edward, he has made many improvements for the Church and School.  In 1991, he totally renovated the Church.  The curriculum has been upgraded by the addition of a computer lab, a full-time technology coordinator, counselor, a learning center and a reading teacher.  A covered pavilion has been added to the grounds and the playground equipment has been replaced or revitalized.

In November of  1999 construction was completed on a new addition that includes new pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and 1st grade classrooms as well as religious education and church offices.  The pastor’s rectory is also incorporated into the new structure along with a multi purpose daycare room for the schools after school care and summer care program.

In June of 1999, the original elementary wing of the school sustained significant damage from a heavy rain storm, which lead to the collapse of the roof.  Demolition of this wing was completed in January 2000. Construction on this portion of the school  which house grades 1 through 4, the school cafeteria, teacher lounge and workroom, and school offices was completed in the Fall of 2000.

St. Edward School has now served the Nashville community for over 48 years providing a Catholic education, which focus on spiritual value, academic excellence, and social maturity. We are proud of our parish and school, our parents, students, pastor, teacher and principal who, throughout the years have helped make this community what it is today.

OUR PASTOR

Rev. Joseph Patrick Breen was ordained in St. Peter Basilica in Rome, Italy on December 20, 1961.  During his forty three years as a priest, he has served in Memphis, Chattanooga, Cleveland, and   Murfreesboro.  He has been the pastor of  St. Edward Church since July 1984.

He is one of nine children of Anna Marie and Paul Breen.  He attended Christ the King School,
Father Ryan High School and St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. He received a license in Theology from the Gregorian University in Rome.

Over 50 and Nifty

In 1988, The Over 50 and Nifty organization was formed to service and involve the senior members of the parish. They endeavor to bring together, for purposes of fellowship, the ladies and gentlemen that have attained the age of fifty. They have guest speaker programs to discuss current topics and take excursions to places of interest such as botanical gardens, museums, historical landmarks, and theatre productions.

The Nifty Fifties (Over Fifty and Nifty) group meets the first Thursday of the month in the Carell Room, and during the summer months in the cafeteria.

Parish Council Members

David Cain, Chairman

(615) 292-9852

The Parish Council is the coordinating and unifying structure of the parish community which enables the faithful to participate fully in the mission of the parish. They collaborate with the pastor in making all major pastoral and administrative decisions. Its membership reflects the various populations of the parish while its guidance and direction reflect an awareness of the needs, anxieties, and hopes of the community. In the light of their faith, members of the council strive to become a Christian team of caring people and a sign of unity to the community which they represent.

St. Edward's Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) is a Catholic Sunday School program for youth in grades PreK-8th attending public or parochial school.  Regular classes meet on Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:15am.  Students are introduced to and educated on Catholic doctrine, prayers, saints, bible stories and rituals while sharing in community service projects.

Our Staff – Administration, Teachers, Aides and Assistants

The St. Edward PREP staff is a group of dedicated volunteers who genuinely love working with children and sharing God's word on Sunday mornings.  Each classroom has an average of 2 teachers with an average 1:10 teacher-student ratio.  For anyone who is interested in teaching or being an assistant in our program, please do not hesitate to contact the Religious Education office. We have training classes for those who have never taught but are willing and able to dedicate some time to our younger generation.   Our teachers are provided development opportunities at St. Edward and through the Diocese of Nashville to refresh their knowledge in the faith and to deepen their spiritual journeys.

Our Parents

During PREP class sessions, parents are encouraged to participate by volunteering to help in the program or continue their own education in our Adult Faith Dialog (AFD) group that meets at the same time in the Carell Room.  It is our goal to ensure that religious education continues throughout the journey on this earth.

"Parents are the first and foremost teachers of their children. They teach informally but powerfully by example and instruction. They communicate values and attitudes by showing love for Christ and His church and for each other, by reverently receiving the Eucharist and living in its spirit, and by fostering justice and love in all their relationships. It is the parents' nurturing of faith in their children that show them the richness and beauty of lived faith". (Sharing the Light of Faith #212)

Sacramental Preparation

1st and 2nd grade religion classes prepare children for their First Eucharist and Reconciliation. Children are required to attend both years in order to be readily prepared for receiving the Sacraments. This has always been a special time for children and their families, bringing much excitement as they learn their prayers and become spiritually aware. A separate program is available for children in grade 3 or higher who have not yet celebrated these sacraments (please see RCIC).  Any exceptions to these programs must be approved by the pastor.

Religious Education also includes the preparation and coordination for the Sacrament of Confirmation which is conferred in the eighth grade.

7th grade students planning on receiving their Confirmation in 8th grade who are not currently attending a parochial school, are required to attend regularly scheduled Pre-Confirmation classes during PREP class time. During this time they will discern the nature of their faith and its commitment and come to understand that it is their decision to continue the faith journey as participating members in the community. Confirmation is the young adult stating to God, “Yes I want to follow your teachings and acknowledge your presence in my life.”

8th grade students (who have completed at least one year of Pre-Confirmation classes and are not in parochial schools) are required to attend classes on scheduled Sunday mornings from September through January. (Approximately 5 class sessions) Classes are held Sunday mornings during regular PREP class time.

All 8th grade students, including those attending parochial schools, are then required to attend scheduled Sunday afternoon sessions beginning in late January through April.  Minimal absences will be allowed due to the small number of class sessions. Students will also be required to attend an all day Saturday retreat and complete an allotted number of service hours during the course of the year.  Any exceptions must be approved by the pastor. The Confirmation Ceremony will take place according to the schedule of the Bishop.

For further information regarding PREP, feel free to call the Religious Education Office at 615-834-4927 or email us at stedprep@gmail.com.

Welcoming Committee

LYNN BOONE, Chairperson, 373-1963

Realizing that building new relationships and becoming an active participant in a new parish can be difficult, the Welcoming Committee was established to help insure the smooth transition of new parishioners into our community. The committee acts as a liaison between the Church Administration and potential new members by acquainting them with St. Edward parish life and facilitating the registration process.

Young Adult Group

The Young Adult Group was formed in 1991 as a means of allowing the 18 to 39 year old members of the parish (married or single) to become acquainted with one another. One of its primary services over the years has been to welcome new parishioners of this age group. Additionally the group has provided help for many parish activities. The Young Adults meet informally once a month to form a calendar of events for the following month, and anyone wishing to participate in this planning session is encouraged to attend. Some of the events planned by the group include dinners, movies, volleyball, and white water rafting.

Currently there is not a group formed.  There is a need for someone to take the lead to get this group up and running again.  If you have interest please email info@stedward.org
