Band Syllabus & Expectations

1st and 2nd Semester 2009 – 2010

Stage Located in the Gym

8:00 a.m. – 7th & 8th Grade

9:00 a.m. – 5th & 6th Grade

Instructor: Jereme Frey  383-4200, freyj@fatherryan.org

 I. Rationale:

This course exists to teach and further the skills associated with playing a musical instrument, reading music, understanding rhythm, and being introduced to different musical styles and genres.

II. Course Aims and Objectives:

 Aims:

The obvious aim of this course is to learn to play an instrument and read music.

 Specific Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student should master the following skills:

Making a characteristic tone on their respective instrument, read music, understand rhythm, know musical terms, understand dynamic markings and their meaning, be able to play at least 4 scales, be able to play complete songs, and perform pieces at concerts.

III. Format and Procedures:

The class will work from a method book as well as supplemental pieces of music provided by the director. The classes will split from time to time to receive individual instruction based on their instrument family (woodwinds, brass, and percussion). There will be playing tests and the students will be expected to participate in all concerts, playing tests, and will be expected to practice at home to some degree. Practice records will be passed out as an optional extra credit activity running the course of the year. This optional record can take the place of low playing test grades.

 IV. My Assumptions:

I expect all students to have their instruments and music at every rehearsal along with a pencil and a band binder. A 3 ring binder with clear sheet protectors will be perfect. I expect the student to be able to play to the best of their abilities all of the music provided and I expect every student to give their best effort in learning an instrument.

 V. Course Requirements:

 Text:

5th & 6th Grade – Band Expressions Book 1, Published by Warner Brothers Publications for their appropriate instrument.

7th & 8th Grade – Band Expressions Book 1 (should already own) & Band Expressions Book 2.

Miscellaneous Materials:

Pencils

3 Ring Binder with clear sheet protectors (10 – 20 should be adequate)

 VII. Grading

Students will be graded based on attendance, playing tests, and classroom behavior. Points will be taken off for talking and disruptions in class. Optional practice records will be provided throughout the year as a means of extra credit.

The grading scale is as follows:

  • 93-100 = A
  • 85-92 = B
  • 77-84 = C
  • 70-76 = D
  • 0-69 = F

VII. Class Rules:

There is to be no food or drink on stage. No chewing gum is allowed. Students are to leave the room clean and strait after each class. They will be expected to stack chairs and put equipment away after each class. Talking during rehearsal is not allowed.

 Beginning of Class:

Students will be expected to get their instruments out and begin to warm-up on appropriate class material or scales.
