Hello! Welcome to the Reading and Rainbows Web Page
I began teaching here in 1988. I am a Reading Specialist and have a Masters Degree in Reading. I feel blessed to work with our St. Edward students, staff, and families, and to be a part of this vital, positive, warm, energetic, faith-based community. My husband, Dave, and I grew up in New Jersey and have been happily married for 40 years. We have been blessed with four children and five grandchildren. We live in Franklin and belong to St. Matthew parish. We have lived here for 22 years. About Reading.......Students come to the Reading Room to enhance their reading and reading related skills. We progress at a rate determined by the children's needs. We read sounds, words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, stories, poems, plays, and books. Some are fiction; some are non-fiction. We discuss them, act them out, and think and write about them. We take Accelerated Reader tests on the computer, give oral book reports, and write creative book reports. We enjoy word games like Scrabble, Sight Word Bingo, Boggle, Hangman, Rattled, and Bananagrams. Younger children come to the Reading Room who need to develop and practice their pre-reading skills, such as phonemic awareness, letter recognition and sound-symbol correspondence. Some children who are reading at advanced levels, come for enrichment and challenges. We do some Readers' Theater, which enables them to combine their reading and dramatic skills! We also read about and conduct science experiments and discuss current events. In addition to the games listed above, we also play Scattergories Junior, Cranium Cadoo, Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire? There are five components to Reading - Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Fluency. Competency in all these areas makes for a successful reader! You can help create life-long readers by reading to or with your children every day! Encourage them to read to learn, to grow, to relax, and to enjoy! Let them see that you enjoy reading; read to yourself; invite them to read to you, their siblings, their grandparents, or even their stuffed animals! Discuss the books you are reading and bring them to life by, for example, visiting the zoo if you are reading about animals. The joy of reading is one of the best gifts you can give to your children! About Rainbows......Our Rainbows For All God's Children groups meet, talk, share and bond. The Rainbows Program consists of peer support groups for children who are experiencing or have experienced transitions in their families, such as separation, divorce, blended families, or the death or illness of a loved one. They are open to students in Pre-K through 7th Grade. There is a Peer Discussion Group for 8th Graders, which is open to all 8th Graders to discuss a variety of issues of interest and concern to them. Meetings are for half an hour a week, here, during the school day. We often meet during lunch time and enjoy lunch together while we talk and interact. We welcome new and returning members. Kenny Williams, our facilitator for the older students, and I, enjoy our time with your children. We will have our Rainbow Wrap-Up Celebration on Holy Thursday, April 21st from 11 to 12. It is a full day of school. You are welcome to join us for lunch and fellowship. The children are all awarded certificates of participation, and choose a gift from us.
If you have any questions or wish to talk to me about your child regarding Reading or Rainbows, please contact me here at 833-5770 or email me at cgleason@stedward.org.
You are in my prayers and I thank you for the gift of your children! God Bless You! Corinne Gleason
